The wildly popular Jazz on the Move series began its fourth year Sunday, January 10 at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The topic was "50 Years of Bossa Nova: A Tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim." The performance and lecture was given by Lori Mechem & Ritmos Picantes. Besides Lori the group includes Roger Spencer (bass), Dann Sherrill (percussion), Chris Brown (drums), Mario DaSilva (guitar), and Denis Solee (sax & flute). Vocalist/percussionist Teree McCormick also made a guest appearance. Enjoy the slideshow below -- photos by Scott Hammaker.
A standing-room crowd at the Frist Center Auditorium was treated to a master class on the Bossa Nova. NJW Director Lori Mechem gave some background on Antonio Carlos ("Tom") Jobim. Percussionist Dann Sherrill told how the classic "Girl From Ipanema" was composed, followed by a lovely vocal rendition of the song in Portuguese and English by Teree Mccormick. Denis Solee discussed the role of American jazzmen Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd in popularizing Bossa Nova. The group closed with a rousing rendition of Jobim's "Chega de Saudade."
